The Province of Oristano, the smallest of Sardinia, has 78
towns and extends over 2.631 sq kms, the population is of about 157.000
inhabitants with 20 ultracentenarian; it borders with the province of Sassari
and Cagliari, and on the westward with Sea Of Sardinia for about 90 km;
its uncontaminated coasts alternate calcareous cliffs, natural arches created
by sea to long beaches of thin sand or beaches as Is Aruttas, shore of quartz
sand. The Peninsula of Sinis, between sand dunes and Phoenician - Punic
town of Tharros, is enclosed in the Sinis Sea Reserve, which includes the
small Palaeozoic granite island of Mal di Ventre where live numerous faunistic
and floristic species.
Part of the flat coast presents a variety of landscapes plenty of a lagoon
system, that makes it one of the most interesting humid area of Europe;
a series of micro-environments where lives Flamingos, Purple Gallinule and
Grey Mullet, from which is made the "bottarga", the caviar of
Cabras, wonderful if accompanied by Vernaccia wine, white wine symbol of
Sinis.
The territory is rich of archaeological sites, which date back since Neolithic
Age, as necropolis, domus de janas, giant's tombs, nuraghi, and remarkable
evidences of the Phoenician, Punic and Roman presence.
In the Province there are many little villages of less 3.000 inhabitants,
and Oristano has about 33.000 inhabitants. The territory is mostly flat,
the plain of Campidano has been cultivated since the Roman period; its main
relieves, Montiferru, Monte Arci and Monte Grighine, give an amazing landscape
thanks to their geological structure. Montiferru and Monte Arci are ancient
extinct volcanos, while Monte Grighini is made of Palaeozoic schist, the
most ancient rocks of the province. The Tirso is its main river, its dam
create Lago Omodeo, then flows into the large Gulf of Oristano. The climate
is temperate with long hot dry breezy summers and short mild rainy winters.
The territory is divided into the historic subregions of Montiferru, Barigadu,
Guilcer and part of Marmilla.
